EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence School Committee has called a special session for Monday evening, Sept. 23, at 6 o’clock in the City Hall Chamber where among other important items on the agenda long-time teacher and sports administrator Bob Duarte is expected to be confirmed as the system’s new athletic director.

Mr. Duarte, 49 and a 25-year veteran of the classroom as a history instructor at East Providence High School, late last week was chosen from a group of three in-house candidates who sought the post vacated by the recent resignation of Paul Amaral. Mr. Amaral held the job for seven full school terms.

Long-time East Providence High School teacher and sports administrator Bob Duarte has been chosen as the system’s new athletic director.

Mr. Duarte served as Mr. Amaral’s assistant athletic director for the same period of time. In addition, he has for nearly two decades been a track/cross country coach at the high school. Mr. Duarte helped mostly EPHS female teams to several division and class titles. His 1996 Townies won the girls’ outdoor track state championship.

He is currently  boys’ cross country coach this fall. He is also the girls’ indoor and outdoor coach. It is likely Mr. Duarte will have to relinquish his duties for the upcoming winter and spring seasons, at least.

Along with the formal approval of Mr. Duarte as the new AD, the School Committee is expected to be presented with the initial draft of the 2013-14 Fiscal Year Budget from Superintendent Kim Mercer. The outline is the first to be put together by Mrs. Mercer, who only took over the top job in the department in the spring of this year.

The budget presentation is an opportunity to vet the document in public prior to a much anticipated joint meeting between the School Committee and the City Council planned for the following evening, Sept. 24, also in the City Hall Chamber scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

The entire Monday, Sept. 23, meeting agenda is as follows:

I. Call to Order Public Session – 6 p.m.

II.  Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag & Moment of Silence

III. Presentation and Discussion of 2013-2014 Budget

IV. Action Items(s); 1. Personnel Appointments

V. Public Comment

VI.  Adjournment
