EAST PROVIDENCE — Weaver Library, 41 Grove Avenue, East Providence presents Dr. Mitra K. Shavarini who will talk about her new book Desert Roots: Journey of an Iranian Immigrant Family on Monday, April 15, at 7 p.m.
The book chronicles migration’s many triumphs and defeats, losses and gains as an Iranian immigrant family pursues that familiar hunger called “the American dream.” In a deeply personal narrative, Dr. Shavarini tells the story of her parents’ remarkable journey to America and then back to Iran. She also speaks of the larger sociopolitical issues that Iranians continue to face in this country since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Dr. Mitra K. Shavarini holds a doctorate from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. She is the author of Educating Immigrants, Experiences of Second Generation Iranians and co-author of Women & Education in Iran and Afghanistan, an Annotated Bibliography. She is a lecturer in Peace, Conflict, and Coexistence Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies at Brandeis University.
