EAST PROVIDENCE — An accident earlier Tuesday, June 3, has caused the left lane of the East Shore Expressway connecting the Wampanoag Trail with Interstate 195 to be closed for at least the next 24 hours.
At approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday, an overheight truck hit the underside of the bridge on Warren Avenue, dislodging the wooden logs or “cribbing” currently helping support the crumbling structure.
The left or northbound lane has been closed by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, and according to the DOT Twitter feed will likely be shuttered through the Wednesday morning commute.
Ironically, DOT representatives were present in East Providence Tuesday night, discussing upcoming plans to replace the very same East Shore Expressway structure in the spring of 2015.
