ACS committee member Janet Marcantonio presents EPHS girls’ basketball coach Mike Solitro with the 2014 Volunteer Values Award, June 6, for his service in the fight against cancer.

EAST PROVIDENCE — The annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life took place Friday evening, June 6, into Saturday afternoon, June 7, at Pierce Stadium.

Hundreds of volunteers and participants, including those from one of the event’s sponsors East Providence AYSO 715, were scheduled to dedicate 18 hours to the cause of raising awareness of and dollars for the fight to eradicate cancer.

Of special note locally, East Providence High School head girls’ basketball coach Mike Solitro was presented with the ACS New England Chapter Volunteer Values Award.

Mr. Solitro created a “Pink Zone” night two years ago for the Townie program. The event has raised several thousands of dollars in its brief existence. The Volunteer Values Award in named and given in the honor of Sandra C. Labrie.
