Public safety personnel arrived on the scene at roughly 10 a.m., minutes after the accident occurred. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation reported heavy traffic at the time of the crash in the direction of East Providence and Seekonk. About an hour later, the debris was cleared and vehicles began to flow freely once again.
The vehicle, appearing to a late model import four-door sedan, came to rest in the grassy median adjacent to the far left lane of traffic. Thick, dark smoke billowed from the car as it lay ablaze.
The driver of the vehicle suffered minor burns, according to East Providence Fire Department Lieutenant James Bellamy. A Bristol FD rescue was first on the scene, he said, speculating the emergency vehicle could have been returning to its town from Rhode Island Hospital because “they were in the east bound lane and the accident was 195 west.”
Lt. Bellamy said East Providence rescue transported one patient from a separate vehicle that was also involved in the accident. East Providence sent two engines, one rescue and a Battalion chief. Seekonk Fire was also on scene.
