Bradley students take top prize at state Construction Career Days

KINGSTON — A team of students from the Bradley Hospital/CADD School recently won the 2013 Rhode Island Construction Career Days bridge building competition.

Students from various R.I. high schools worked as a team to design and build a bridge out of balsa wood. The URI Transportation Center provided guidance to each group, answering any questions the teacher or student had. The bridges were brought to the construction career day events (April 24-25), where they were tested for strength by members of the Rhode Island Consulting Engineers (RICE) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The winning team, “Team Konstruction” from the CADD school, constructed a bridge that supported 60 lbs. They received a trophy to display at their school. The team included Gigi Kohler, Jason Taylor, Johvanny Bernier, Jamar Abney, Christopher Pietros, and Brandon Sousa.

Construction Career Day events are a workforce development tool that introduce high school students to careers in the transportation construction industry and support the pipeline that will provide the professionals of tomorrow. This event was attended by more than 1,600 students from 30 Rhode Island high schools. The event was coordinated by the University of Rhode Island Transportation Center (URITC) and supported by RICE, FHWA, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and the Rhode Island Public Works Association (RIPWA).

Results of the competition were as follows: First place – CADD School “Team Konstruction” – 60 lbs; Second place – Tiverton High School “Team Gorilla” – 59 lbs; Third place – Tiverton High School “Team Redwing” – 47 lbs.
