EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Career and Technical Center recently conducted a very successful fundraiser in support of cancer research with all proceeds going to the Gloria Gemma Foundation.
The students went above and beyond by taking on responsibilities such as scheduling and greeting clients. Honing their training skills, they turned the classroom into a relaxing spa night by offering skin, hair and nail services. Together cosmetology staff and students raised a total of $775 for the Gemma Foundation.
The culinary arts program also contributed to the breast cancer fundraiser. Trade Winds Restaurant opened as an English style tea room. The menu included a traditional tea platter with freshly baked scones topped with clotted cream and cherry preserves, and an assortment of finger sandwiches. Soup, and salad were served to compliment the platter. Desserts included cookies, tarts. Scores of teapots, cups, creamers pitchers and sugar bowls, along with fabric, flowers and baskets were donated by Savors, to complete an old fashioned china and lace look to the tables.
Students had an opportunity to make and serve unique food as well as earn community service hours. And our culinary arts department achieved a total of $125, which will also be donated to the Gemma Foundation/ A total of $900 will be donated to cancer research.
TradeWinds, the CTC culinary cafe, is now opened for business until the end of May. Business hours fluctuate. You can call 435-7815 for hours of operation. Reservations are greatly appreciated.
