PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police lauded a jury decision late last week, which returned a conviction of a Providence man in the stabbing of two brothers in the fall of 2012.

Jasper Williams, 22, was found guilty on four counts — two of felony assault with a dangerous weapon and two for assault and battery — at the conclusion of the five-day trial on Friday, Dec. 5, presided over by Superior Court Judge Daniel A. Procaccini. The jury deliberated for nearly three hours. No sentencing date was scheduled.  The defense immediately made a motion for a new trial. The hearing is set for Thursday, Dec. 18. Mr. Williams was released on $15,000 surety bail or $1,500 cash over the objections of prosecutors, who sought to have him held without bail.

In the wee hours of Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, Mr. Williams was alleged to have stabbed Jared Burrows and Jacob Burrows multiple times during a violent altercation outside the Knights of Columbus Hall on Crescent View Avenue. The incident occurred at approximately 12:38 a.m. The brothers as well as their alleged assailant and some 100 people total were in attendance at a “dance” party held at the KofC hall beginning on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Jared Burrows, 20 at the time of the incident, suffered the more distressing of the injuries. He spent time in the Intensive Care Unit at Rhode Island Hospital and wasn’t immediately available to be interviewed by investigators.

Jacob Burrows, then 19, was stabbed three times under the right arm and rib area. He also needed significant medical attention but was able to be questioned by EPPD detectives investigating the incident. The younger Burrows was able to give police a description of the assailant.

Detective Corporal Jeffrey Mace was the lead investigator for the EPPD.

“We love it. It’s great to get a conviction following a jury trial. Jeff Mace did a good job working the case. It’s always good for the public to know we got a conviction,” said EPPD Detective Captain Richard Frazier.
