EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Fire Department crews responded to a pair of incidents in recent days, quickly bringing under control both a fire at a multi-family house located at North Broadway early Thursday morning, May 28, and an outburst at the site of the former wood pellet operation on Ferris Avenue Wednesday afternoon, May 27.

Fire personnel were called to the 657 North Broadway scene at approximately 9 a.m. Thursday. They came upon heavy smoke emanating from roof of the three-family home. The third floor suffered the most damage. There was limited effect on the second floor and no damage reported to the first floor.

East Providence Fire Chief Oscar Elmasian said there were three occupants total inside the dwelling at the time of the incident. Each of the residents were able to get out of the home. Two were taken to hospital for observation of non-life threatening injuries. No fire firefighters were injured and Red Cross was assisting the residents affected by the incident.

EPFD investigators later determined the fire was electrical in nature, likely due to a faulty cellphone charger.

Wednesday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m., fire personnel were called to the scene of the former wood pellet plant located at 275 Ferris Ave.

Chief Elmasian said saw dust, the remnants of the operation at the site, caught fire. He said crews tamped out of the flames and needed to rake and dig around the area to make sure there were no smoldering embers. Again, no one was injured during the incident.

The location, which most notably was once the home of Nyman Manufacturing, is also remembered for a four-alarm blaze created by wood dust back in August of 2013 when the business was being run under the Inferno Wood Pellet moniker.
