RUMFORD — Stanford junior Cameron Wilson surged up the leader board by the conclusion of Round 2 of the 52nd Annual Northeast Amateur Invitational golf tournament Thursday, June 20, at Wannamoisett Country Club, the Connecticut native finishing in a share of the top spot with opening round leader Rafael Becker at 6-under par, 132.

City resident Owen Lynch played as a marker during Round 2 of the Northeast Amateur Thursday, June 20, at Wannamoisett after a competitor withdrew. Lynch eyes his approach shot on the 18th hole.

Conditions were rather benign for the second round. The wind did kick up at times, but Wannamoisett’s notoriously thick rough and undulating greens proved the match of some of the world’s best young golfers.

Wilson didn’t seem affected much. He steadily shot a second consecutive 3-under 66 Thursday, birdieing five holes to go along with two bogeys. Becker, the Brazilian and Wichita State senior, followed up his blistering 7-under Round 1 score with a 1-over 70 Thursday, his three birdies overridden by four bogeys.

The pair sits two strokes ahead of the field at the halfway mark. Cory Whitsett, a junior from the University of Alabama, resides alone in third place at 4-under after he posted a 1-under 68 Thursday.

Likewise, Bo Andrews, of Raleigh, N.C., sits in solo fourth following his even-par 69 in Round 2.

Rhode Island’s Bobby Leopold remains in contention, resting in a share of fifth with Patrick Rodgers, of Avon, Ind., at 2-under. Leopold, of Coventry and who plays out of nearby Ledgemont in Seekonk, shot a 1-over 70 Thursday.

Also of note, defending champion Justin Shin shook off a poor opening round to move up 48 spots in the standings to a share of 15th after shooting a 3-under 66.

Cameron Andrade, the young son of Bristol native and PGA Tour pro Billy Andrade, improved by four shots Thursday, carding a 3-over 72 to reside in a share of 61st at 9-over through two rounds.

Most of the other locals in the field each fell back Thursday. Cumberland’s Jamison Randall shot a 3-over 72 to finished at 4-over and in share of 27th. Warwick’s Brad Valois, playing out of city club Metacomet, shot a 4-over 73 to finish at 5-over and in a share of 35th. Wannamoisett’s Charlie Blanchard followed up his 79 in Round 1 with a 75 Thursday to finish at 16-over and in a share of 82nd.

Of note Thursday, due to a withdrawal, Rumford and Wannamoisett’s Owen Lynch, a junior at Dartmouth College and former State Junior Amateur champ, played as a marker with Canadian Chris Hemmerich. Hemmerich shot a 4-over 73 and is in a share of 47th at 7-over total for the event.
