PROVIDENCE — Three East Providence state legislators are putting pressure on the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) for a comprehensive reconstruction plan for the crumbling Pawtucket Avenue.

Senator Daniel DaPonte and Representatives Gregg Amore and Katherine Kazarian have written to RIDOT Director Peter Alviti requesting a detailed and complete plan to address the mounting concerns regarding the rapidly deteriorating condition of Pawtucket Avenue.

“This is first and foremost a safety concern for our constituents,” said Senate Finance Chairman DaPonte (D-Dist. 14).  “Pawtucket Avenue is the major pipeline through East Providence for all residents and visitors and it has been neglected for far too long.  A plan must be put in place to rectify this situation before further damage to the road and our constituents’ health and property occur.”

“Day in and day out I receive calls from residents of the city pleading for something to be done with Pawtucket Avenue and when looking at the condition of the road I can’t blame them,” said Rep. Amore (D-Dist. 65).  “East Providence residents pay their taxes and they deserve a safe Pawtucket Avenue to travel on with their families and vehicles.”

“A safe Pawtucket Avenue is not only a necessity for the well being of our constituents, but, this is also very much an issue of economic development as well,” said Rep. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63).  “How can East Providence expect to bring in new businesses and retain existing ones if the main road through our city is not fit for travel?  The East Providence infrastructure is collapsing and the state needs to uphold its responsibility for maintaining acceptable conditions for East Providence residents.”
